"We are each other’s hope" – Elie Wiesel
Iqbal Masih was sold as a child slave at age 4 and forced to work on a carpet loom for twelve hours a day. At age 10, he escaped and joined BLLF (Bonded Labor Liberation Front of Pakistan) to champion the cause of child laborers in Pakistan. On April 16, 1995, he was brutally gunned down believed to be by the members of “Carpet Mafia”. His age was 12. Craig Kielburger, a 12 year old Canadian boy, was struck by Iqbal’s story. He gathered his Grade 7 classmates and formed “Free The Children” in April 1995 with the following goals.
Free the children from poverty
Free the children from exploitation
Free the children from the notion that they are powerless to affect change
Today, “Free the Children” , is the world’s largest network of children helping children through education using innovative programs, in 45 countries. Friends of Iqbal was formed in October 2005, when a few friends got together to support the important work of “Free The Children”, They adopted the name in honor of Iqbal Masih.
